1959 MG A Roadster

The MGA is a sports car produced by MG from 1955 to 1962. The MGA replaced the MG TF 1500 Midget and represented a complete change in style compared to MG’s prior cars. A total of 101,081 units were built and the majority were sold overseas. The MGA’s design dates back to 1951, when MG designer Syd Enever created a streamlined body for George Philips’ TD Le Mans car. The new bodywork traded the MG TF’s articulated fenders and running board for ponton styling with a single styled envelope fully enclosing the width and uninterrupted length of the car.

The Vehicle

This MGA has been well loved by its owner. The seller has owned the car for the past 37 years and in that time plenty of work has been done. The car was completely stripped down to its frame and restored in 1984, and over $8000 worth of parts from Moss Motors were installed. Dents and dings were heated and pounded out, new floorboards were made and coated with waterproof paint. The original 1500cc engine was swapped out for a 1600cc engine which was rebuilt and now has approximately 30,000 miles on it. The brakes and master cylinder were replaced in January of 2020, the battery is new, and so are the tires with only 2,583 miles on them.

On the Outside

This particular MGA is white. As stated previously, imperfections were dealt with during the restoration – which occurred roughly 40 years ago at this point – and to that end the seller reports that a few more chips in the paint have appeared during its travels. The seller also reports that the only part that needs repairs are the windshield wipers, and that the car doesn’t have side curtains.

On the Inside

The interior of this vehicle has been redone. It is now black leather with red piping. The seats are excellent thanks to their recent refurbishing, as are the carpets and dashboard. The leather wrapped steering wheel looks like new, and the door panels also appear to be without flaw.

Thanks to easy living in California, the seller reports that the car is rust free.

What We Think

This MG has been well loved by the seller, and the care the seller took to keep it in good shape is abundantly apparent. The MGA is an adorable roadster, and this specific example is perfect for any occasion. It’s no trailer queen, but the Brits built it to be driven and enjoyed. After all, how could you not enjoy cruising around in a topless classic British sports car?

If needed, please remember we have a network of suppliers we work with regularly including finance and storage companies, plus we have a list of contacts who can help with transport and shipping.

BORING, but IMPORTANT: Please note that whilst we at The Market always aim to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available, we cannot claim they are perfect analyses of any of the vehicles for sale. We offer far greater opportunity for bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding than traditional auctions, and we never stop encouraging bidders to take advantage of this. We do take a good look at the vehicles delivered to our premises for sale, but this only results in our unbiased personal observations, not those of a qualified inspector or other professional, or the result of a long test drive.

Also, localised paint repairs are common with collectable and classic cars and if they have been professionally carried out then they may be impossible to detect, even if we see the car in person. So, unless we state otherwise, please assume that any vehicle could have had remedial bodywork at some point in its life.

Additionally, please note that most of the videos on our site have been recorded using simple cameras which often result in 'average' sound quality; in particular, engines and exhausts notes can sound a little different to how they are in reality.

Please note that this is sold as seen and that, as is normal for used goods bought at auction, return policy does not apply. See our FAQs for more info, and feel free to inspect any vehicle as much as you wish.
