1978 MG B Convertible

Replacing the MGA in 1962, the B was all new and remained on sale until 1980 becoming one of the most popular sports cars the world has ever seen.

Unlike its body on frame predecessors, the B was a modern unitary construction car giving it a stiffer shell and improved handling.

The 1.8 litre B Series engine could push it to almost 100mph, but simple mechanicals and good parts supply mean its an easy classic car to look after.

Das Fahrzeug

First registered in 1978, at 36 years old the MG was taken off the road for a complete and extensive restoration in 2014, the work being done to what looks to be a very high standard and today it remains in superb condition.

At that time it was treated to some replacement body panels and full respray, a fresh interior and new hood along with new Minilite wheels and brightwork, after so much work it looks like a new car again!

Das Äußere

When the car was restored in 2014 new wings and door skins were fitted before the entire car was repainted. Finished in Damask Red, the dark paintwork looks better than factory smooth with a deep mirror finish and we have yet to spot any dings or stone chips on the perfect panels. Even the door shuts are spotless and unmarked complete with new sill tread plates when restored.

The brightwork was all either new or re-chromed when the car was restored so the bumpers, grill and trim such as mirrors and wiper arms look factory fresh, and new rubbers were used. At the back the tail lights were replaced with new items.

and the car was fitted with Minilite alloy wheels which look box fresh and wear premium brand Dunlop tyres, which have deep tread all round.

The hood is a mohair item which fits well and has no damage, and the rear windows are bright and clear.

Das Innere

The black leather seats look like they have not been sat in much, just slight signs of use to the drivers seat but no scuffs or wear to the hide. The door cards are in great shape with only the slightest marks and very light patina on the drivers side from feet getting in and out and some flaked paint on the door handle surround.

Being fairly new, the black carpets are in excellent condition, and hide solid metal beneath. while the dashboard is also in great condition with the dash-top free from cracks. A Blaupunkt ACR 3251 head unit, which although far newer than the car is simply styled and blends easily into the dash.

Adding some glamour to the otherwise all black interior is a wood rimmed and polished metal steering wheel, which suits the car perfectly and is unmarked.

In the boot the carpets are new and tucked under the floor is an original Rostyle spare wheel and the tool kit.

Lift the bonnet and the engine bay is spotlessly clean. There is some paint flaked from the 1.8 litre engine and some ancillaries, however the motor looks free of leaks from either oil or coolant and a Kenlowe electric fan was installed in 2014.

The four-cylinder power unit drives through a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive.

The underbody appears very solid, it has been thoroughly undersealed all over and the exhaust and hangers, suspension parts, steering and brake components all still look box fresh and as new.

Being a 1978 car, it started life as a rubber bumper version, but as part of its 2014 restoration it had a chrome bumper kit installed to give the classic MGB look. At that time the car was stripped back and had new front wings and door skins let in and the shell was fully repainted and rebuilt to the condition you see it in now.

There are lots of receipts in the file from the time of the restoration for parts of all sizes, down to the correct beading for the rear wings.

Was wir denken

The condition of this B is outstanding. The recent paint was done well and is in excellent condition, and inside the new leather seats and carpet make it a very nice place to be. Minilite wheels and chrome bumpers add an extra touch of style and the electric fan means it should cope with modern traffic more easily.

We estimate this will sell for between £8,500 - £12,000.
