Paul's review

Paul Hegarty - Consignment Specialist Message Paul

“ An enthusiast owned car for many years, with authorised dealer and specialist history from new. ”

Quite a rare car today, being highly desirable in Station Wagon configuration, and as it's on-site with us in Abingdon, is certainly worthy of further inspection.

Vehicle Story

The Land Rover is one of the cars that put British motoring on the global map. It’s known the world over and as a result of minimal style changes over the near 40 years of its production, it is instantly recognisable. The Defender 110 (so named due to the length of the body) the model was turned into an incredible array of special editions, and one offs fit for every purposes.

The Defender has the hard-earned reputation for being unbeatable in many off-road situations and it has stood Land Rover in good stead to build upon that to offer new and impressive systems to keep you going when the tarmac stops.

Vehicle Overview

Owned since 2017, this Land Rover has been well cared for, always being serviced by a main dealer or specialist. Included in the sale are all the original manuals with receipts and records of service history and invoices for work done to the car. It was purchased from Nene Overland in Peterborough after trading in a Defender 90 (the owner is a serial Land Rover owner) to help with the owner’s requirements for its towing capacity and versatility.

The car has been used for both work and pleasure, taking the owner on holidays and even playing a part in the owner’s son’s wedding to transport the groomsmen. The owner also reports that they have never had an issue with the car during the time with the car, with the only major work being the newly replaced sump.

Now retired, the seller would like to see the car go to someone who will use it to its fullest capabilities as it is currently not being used as much as it has been previously.

Exterior

Finished in Silver metallic paint, this Defender has a modern look to it overall. It has been driven and enjoyed too, so there are a few scuffs, scratches, and marks here and there, with the main one being on the front passenger side door. The marks are not excessive however, and there is minimal corrosion too, overall presenting in tidy condition.

Contrasting black trim with silver front wing chequer plate gives the Defender a clean contrasting, rugged look. The car comes with rear mudguards, tow bar with electrics and side and rear steps.

The 5 spoke alloys look to be in good condition with minimal marks and suit the aesthetics of the car wonderfully, especially when paired with the Yokohama ‘Geolandar’ All terrain tyres that look to have plenty of life left in them.

Overall, this is a very smart looking Land Rover in highly desirable station wagon guise. It is an honest car that has clearly been loved by its current owner.

Interior

Not known for their comfort and refinement historically, as the Defender developed it was one area where Land Rover put more effort and focus into improving. Inside this Defender you’ll find perforated black half leather/vinyl, half cloth seats with black carpet and trim to contrast the exterior colour.

There are very few marks or issues to draw your attention to in the interior in terms of wear and tear but perhaps with the Defender’s reputation that should be no surprise, with lots of hardwearing materials used as standard. The dash and centre console look in very good condition with what looks to be an aftermarket Sony headunit bringing the audio entertainment in line with more modern tech.

The best bit about this Defender being a station wagon is the sheer volume of people and stuff it can take. The seating also comes with plenty of options in terms of how many people/how much stuff you’d like to carry, with things folding away like an old transformer toy.

Being an XS version, this Defender also benefits from heated seats and air-conditioning. It also has a rear view camera via the rear view mirror, but the vendor has not reinstated this following a windscreen replacement.

Mechanical

A 2.4 litre diesel engine powers things here, all believed to be standard equipment that has simply been maintained and run regularly and with approximately 122,000 miles for an engine like this, that’s no sweat at all.

The seller tells us that the car runs sweetly and is a reliable work horse just as you’d expect, with enough torque to pull you out of trouble and with smooth running enough to keep you soothed whilst tackling the motorways.

Looking under the bonnet, the bay presents nice and clean with no signs of fluid leaks, split hoses, exposed wires, or anything else out of place to our eyes.

The underside does have some surface rust here and there, but it does not look to be structural or terminal. If the new owner wanted to ensure the longevity of the car, this car would be a perfect candidate for some light underbody treatment. Otherwise it is in a presentable condition in line with what you’d expect from a car of this age and mileage.

History Highlights

The Land Rover comes with a V5c owner’s document, full HPI check, and a valid MOT until 11/07/2024 with the only minor being the wiper blades. There is a neat summary of all the work done to the car going back to 2012 with some notable works including a new door lock assembly (a previous MOT failure fault). Some major work in 2015 including investigation and fixing of things such as central locking, alarm, steering wheel off centre, locks lamps and transmission issues. The car had a new windscreen in 2015 too and finally and more recently the car had a new sump in 2022.

What We Think

The 110 XS SW LWB Defender is a highly desirable model, giving you a sweet combination of classic looks and modern updates in terms of running gear and interior outfitting. Add to that the care this car has received and you have a tempting proposition.

With 2 sets of keys, original manuals, and a good service history, this is surely one to consider when looking to step into the world of Land Rover ownership.

We think that this lovely example of Land Rover’s 7-seater XS will achieve somewhere between £18,000 and £23,000.
