1979 HONDA GL1000 Gold Wing

Background

The Honda Gold Wing took the biking world by storm when it was announced in 1974. Here was a 998cc flat four, water-cooled touring machine of exquisite quality, which went on to become a bi-word for luxury touring and most of all, reliability. The Gold Wing (albeit now in 1800cc flat six configuration) continues to head up the Honda motorcycle range 47 years later.

Originally conceived as more of a sporting machine to rival the Japanese opposition from bikes such as the Kawasaki Z1, and the European BMW and Moto Guzzi competition, the ‘Wing soon found its niche as a smooth, stylish long-distance cruiser, selling particularly well in America. It used advanced automotive technology with features such as belt-driven overhead cams, shaft drive and triple disk brakes, all very innovative for a motorcycle in 1975. Although quite a heavy machine, it was powerful and torquey. It was also no slouch, with a top speed nudging 125mph.

The Vehicle

Sold new in September 1979 and having covered just 33,000 miles in the intervening four decades across six owners, before the current keeper took it on in 2021 as "memory lane" purchase, having used one whilst living in LA in the 1980's. In the last year he has undertaken significant recommissioning, overhauling much of the bike to ensure it was both safe, reliable and fun to use. This included amongst other things, a full service including all filters, oil, fuel and air and new spark plugs, caps and leads. It also crucially had new cam belts, a vital upgrade in a classic bike of this age. On the cooling side, a new water pump with gaskets was fitted, the radiator was flushed and pressure tested and new coolant and anti-freeze were added. Some £2000 worth of investment later, it now looks and rides superb but a new project is waiting in the wings so the Honda is making way.

On the Outside

The tank and side fairings have excellent black paint with neat gold pin striping, with almost no marks to speak of and a handy lockable cubby hidden in the top of the tank. It has the original gold badges, all in good condition but with a little gold flaked off in places.

The black painted frame is also in excellent condition. It required a small weld repair to the centre stand, which was done professionally, and the the exhaust bracket also needed remaking (see photos of the work) and now looks like new.

It also has new Bridgestone tyres front and back and the wheels are unmarked, the chrome mud guards are like new and the stand has a new rubber foot.

On the Inside

The Giuliari double seat is in great shape with no rips or tears. On top of the tank, the cubby door is covered in textured vinyl and is in great condition. The gold logo is good and the the dials, three on the tank, the speedo and rev counter on the handlebars, are all have clear and bright glass, although the white text on the three coloured tell tale lights above the ignition switch has worn slightly.

The grips and controls are all in great shape and it even has the original Honda tool kit with branded spanners in the roll, as well as a rare original owners manual.

Underneath

As part of the recommissioning, the Honda has had a great deal done, with things like the choke cable, brackets and fittings, water pump O ring and fan switch replaced. The brakes have been overhauled with the calliper's and master cylinder/reservoir also being rebuilt and new "soft" pads front and back.

It was given a full service as mentioned earlier and now starts and runs smoothly, and as we have come to expect from a Japanese bike, there are no leaks on the garage floor!

History Highlights

Unfortunately, we do not have any paperwork for the motorcycle but we can advise that it has now been registered as MOT except with the DVLA.

What We Think

This Gold Wing is in exceptional condition, with low miles, professionally detailed and fresh from a full service with new Bridgestone tyres, it is now ready to ride and enjoy.

It is MOT exempt but we would always recommend either an annual MOT or inspection for piece of mind.

Our estimate for this motorcycle is £4,000 - £6,000.

BORING, but IMPORTANT: Please note that whilst we at The Market always aim to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available, we cannot claim they are perfect analyses of any of the vehicles for sale. We offer far greater opportunity for bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding than traditional auctions, and we never stop encouraging bidders to take advantage of this. We do take a good look at those vehicles which are delivered to our premises for sale, but this only results in our unbiased personal observations, not those of a qualified inspector or other professional, or the result of a long test drive.

Also, localised paint repairs are common with collectable and classic cars and if they have been professionally carried out then they may be impossible to detect, even if we see the car in person. So, unless we state otherwise, please assume that any vehicle could have had remedial bodywork at some point in its life.

Additionally, please note that most of the videos on our site have been recorded using simple cameras which often result in 'average' sound quality; in particular, engines and exhausts notes can sound a little different to how they are in reality.

Please note that this is sold as seen and that, as is normal for used goods bought at auction, return policy does not apply. See our FAQs for more info, and feel free to inspect any vehicle as much as you wish.
