2000 BENTLEY Arnage Red Label

Background

Built between 1998 and 2009, the Bentley Arnage replaced the much-loved Mulsanne Turbo. Broadly the same as the Rolls-Royce badged Silver Seraph, it broke with tradition by binning the legendary 6.75-litre V8 in favour of a much more modern BMW V8 32-valve engine with a Cosworth-engineered twin-turbo installation.

The Seraph, on the other hand, while very similar under the skin, was given the BMW V12 engine in an attempt to take it to even greater heights than the Bentley. And yet, in a plot twist worthy of an airport novel, BMW threatened to stop supplying engines after VW took control of Bentley, so VW went back to using the (updated) 6.75-litre turbocharged Rolls-Royce engine we’d all come to know and love.

The BMW-engined cars are referred to as the Green Label, while the Rolls-Royce-engined version are the Red Label. The latter received larger wheels and brakes to help cope with the engine’s greater weight, and both models got a slightly stiffer bodyshell with the introduction of the 2000MY vehicles.

For a while the two models ran side-by-side with power and performance enthusiasts preferring the 6.75-litre car for its improved acceleration and in-gear urge, while press-on drivers more concerned with handling than outright poke plumped for the model with the German engine under the bonnet, largely because of its 600lb weight saving. (That said, only seven W-engined Arnages are thought to have been built, and all are left-hand-drive.

So, for the majority of enthusiasts the pinnacle of the Arnage range is the Red Label; after all, they argue, if you’re going to own a Bentley you want it to have a proper hand-crafted, Old School engine under the bonnet, don’t you?

The Vehicle

With a mileage that’s only just poked its nose over the 40,000-mile mark, this Silver Pearl Bentley Arnage Red Label appears to have led the gentlest of lives.

Fitted with a stunning Grey and Wildberry interior and sporting chromed alloy wheels, it was first registered in March 2000 and came into the seller’s hands after a “long, hard search” to find the right car in the right colours.

Used most recently as a wedding car (“it’s made a lot of people very happy”), the owner explains that it’s been fastidiously maintained because he didn’t want to be responsible for a bride arriving at the church on the back of an AA truck…

Only for sale because he, like so many of us, has more classic cars than space to house them, this is a reluctant sale of a much-loved car.

On the Outside

We’ve done our usual pre-sale inspection and were delighted with how the Arnage has survived. The panels all align very well, with consistent shutlines and an absence of the sort of dents, dinks, and other damage that are sure-fire warning signs of an ill-treated car.

The paintwork is equally good, being shiny and beautifully maintained.

The chromework is good too, as are the badges and light lenses. The headlamps are starting to go milky and could do with being polished to restore them to their former glory.

The chromed alloy wheels are fine but given how good the rest of the exterior is we can’t help but think the new owner might want to splash out on having them refurbished to bring them up to the same standard as everything else.

With Pirelli P-Zero tyres on all four corners, the front tyres are very good but while the rears are still legal, they won’t be that way for long so need changing.

We will never get tired of telling you that experience shows that matching high-quality tyres are an infallible sign of a caring and mechanically sympathetic owner who is prepared to spend the appropriate amount in maintaining their car properly. Their presence does not, of course, preclude the need for a thorough inspection - something the vendor would welcome, by the way – but it does perhaps give you a shortcut into their attitude towards maintenance.

If we are being picky then the there is a small amount of pitting to the chrome exhaust tailpipes, the rear number plate needs replacing with one that fits, and the odd small spot of developing corrosion (i.e. #205 and #220).

On the Inside

If the outside of the Bentley is discreet and subtle, the interior gave its first owner the chance to let loose a little, specifying Wildberry and Grey two-tone leather.

It’s in great shape too, as you can see. With lashing of chrome and walnut veneer and top-quality hide, all the usual styling cues are there.

The leather seats are in a fine condition; still plump and comfortable, the lightest of creasing to the surfaces was noted. They all adjust as they should and they’re as supportive as you’d expect in a car with the Bentley’s sporting background.

The carpets are good, and they’re protected by some very thick lambswool overmats.

The headlining is taut and clean, and the door cards are excellent.

The boot is huge and clean and as well appointed as the rest of the Arnage.

We’ve tested the electric windows, and they all work as they should, as does everything else we checked upon inspection of the car. Even the air-conditioning blows nice ‘n’ cold.

An aftermarket Parrot Bluetooth system is fitted, and there’s even a chrome tissue holder for the rear seat passengers to dip into.

We picked up some light scratches to the base of the driver’s seat trim (#102) but other noticeable wear and tear seems to be limited to the gear knob and steering wheel but even here, the two high-contact points within the cabin, the patination is minimal; say what you like about Bentley, but they know how to build a long-lasting car.

Underneath

As you can see, the Bentley starts on request and the 6.75-litre turbocharged engine settles down to a steady tickover. It revs and drives beautifully, too and doesn’t make any unusual noises. Oh, and there are no warning lights illuminated either upon inspection, which is more good news, as is the fact that it shows good oil pressure and a charge to the battery.

The engine bay is very, very clean as well, but that hasn’t come as a surprise by now, has it?

The Bentley comes with the book pack, some expired MoT certificates and, to prove how much it’s been loved over the years, a thick wedge of bills.

The service history book has been stamped as follows:

  • 11.10.2006 and 30,157 miles – service by Bentley Newcastle
  • 20.06.2017 and 37,466 miles – service and suspension work by Fearon, independent Bentley specialist
  • 04.05.2022 and 39,717 miles – oil service and fluid check by (unreadable)

The Bentley’s MoT certificate is valid until May 2023 and the online history shows the mileage gradually creeping up, which is consistent with what the rest of the paperwork says.

The recent Vehicle History Check is clean and it comes with two sets of keys.

What We Think

The fact that a turbocharged Bentley like this can be yours for the price of a not-terribly-well-equipped Ford Fiesta might be a tired old cliché, but it is true; and no motoring adventure is going to be downgraded by being undertaken in an Arnage, is it?

That you can pick up such a car for between £15,000 and £20,000 seems incredible to us and is such a pitiful sum as to represent real value.
